Finger episode

Let me start by saying that I DO know how stupid I am for allowing (actually, causing) this to happen. So far everyone, including my parents, have been very gracious and kind in not lecturing me and rubbing my foolishness in my face~even tho it’s GOT to be hard for them to hold back! I do appreciate it!

I’m typing this from my iPhone because I don’t need to use my fingers on this keyboard, just my thumbs. Still, please forgive any typos that may occur.

Yesterday around 9am I was mowing the lawn. I don’t bag the grass clippings, I just leftism fall back to the lawn. Our mower is made for a bag tho, and there’s a flap that must be lifted when the bag is not attached to release the clippings. Now and then the area gets clogged with the trimmings and I’ll lift the flap and reach down and release the trimming ~ and no I don’t turn the mower off while doing this. (I should say, I DIDN’T). Yesterday I wasn’t paying attention and put my hand in too far and the blade clipped my middle finger on my left hand.

Now, I have acrylic on my nails, and even tho it hurt like hell, I thot that maybe it just caught and popped off the acrylic. Those of you who really know me know that I don’t handle these situations well at all and I frequently pass out. So, knowing this about myself I ran into the house to the kit hen sink before looking at my hand. I got to the sink and looked down long enough to see the (oh yeah warning: this is gross) skin from my tip of my finger sliced almost all the way across (looking at it from the palm side of my hand). So without checking more details I grabbed a kitchen dish towel and my phone & ran to my front door. I unlocked the front door, lay down on the floor and called my poor husband to tell him to come home. (I say ‘poor husband’ because while this is definitely not the first of this type of phone call he’s gotten from me, it’s definitely the worst!). All this time, mind you, I’m moaning and crying. Then I called my neighbor Jeri to tell her I couldn’t watch her kids (they were going to spend the day with me). She said she was coming right over and I moaned ‘wait a minute…you don’t handle these situations well do you?’ she said no. Then I told her to go ahead and stay away cos there’s no need for two of us to be on the floor. Jeri then called my other neighbor Kate. Kate came in and asked how bad it was and I told her is wS pretty bad so she called her husband Tony over. Poor Tony just had knee surgery and I’m on the floor writhing in pain and he’s trying to bend down to look at my finger which was wrapped in the dish towel. He saw it and told Kate to call 911. By that time Jeri stopped by so Kate told Jeri to call 911. Kate was on the floor with me rubbing my back and helping to keep me calm. Then travis called back to ask if someone needed to go outside to find the tip of my finger and I said no, I think it’s still all holding together. Then Tony took the phone to talk to Travis and tell him what he saw, and I had to tell Tony to leave the room! I can’t listen to the details!! Aaargh! Then Shannon (neighbor) came over to help! Now that I think back I have to giggle at the drama! Shannon put a cold towel on my forehead and Kate got me a bowl (in case I needed to puke). The EMTs arrived and took a nice chunk of grass out but then I said OUCH so thy wrapped it up as well as they could and travis tool me to the emergency room.

I got an x-ray of my hand and found out I’d fractured the bone. The blade cut my finger down to the bone on one location and of course severed a bunch of super sensitive nerve endings, hence the extreme pain.

The doc gave me two vicodin and an antibiotic. About 30-45 minutes later I told he it didn’t touch the pain an I needed something else. They put an IV in my hand and then a shot of Morphine. Nothing. Another 30 min go by and I told her I thot she gave me a placebo cos I was still in horrible pain. (for almost 100% of this time I am crying cos the pain is so bad). She gave me another shot of morphine. Nothing. Then I was just so frustrated from all the pain!! They finally got someone from ortho to come down and see me and give me a few shots in my hand of Lydacaine, and ahhh! My hand went numb. The second shot of morphine made me sleepy so after she was do e cleaning the wound she told me id have to wait for her boss, a hand doc, to come look and finish me up…so I dozed in and out of sleep for the next hour and a half. (Travis was in a chair next to me the whole time).
In the meantime I got an IV of antibiotics and a tetanus shot.

Finally a bunch of docs from the hand dept came in and numbed my hand again. (oh sweet relief!) they cleaned all the debris and stitched me up, with ‘about a dozen’ stitches.

The doc told me that the acrylic literally saved my fingers! My index finger was hit, but only the acrylic came off, and even my nail stayed in place! On my middle finger the acrylic was pretty torn up and the doc had to remove a small part of my actual nail but all things considered, I’m wicked lucky! He thinks the acrylic kept my finger tip from coming right off.

So after spending a very painful and food/water deprived (in case I needed surgery they didn’t want me eating or drinking) EIGHT hours in the emergency room we were able to leave.

When we got home Kate and Amanda were in my front yard with my dogs! My dogs love them! While we were gone, Amanda finished mowing my yard, cleaned up with the blower and put everything away!!! While she was doing that, Kate came inside and cleaned! She vacuumed all the grass I tracked in, vacuumed my bedroom, made the bed, fed the dogs, cleaned the litter boxes and straightened up the kitchen!!! AND all the little girls made me an awesome get well card! AND there was a get well balloon, flowers and chocolates!! I think the chocolate was my favorite part. ;)

So, that’s my story. Let this be a good lesson for all you ladies out there! Always, always, always make sure you’re up to date on your manicure!!

Eva, Teton and Sarah McGraw!

Yesterday Ruby and I were lucky enough to spend the day with Sarah McGraw, of McGraw Photography. Sarah does Architectural Photography AND Pet Photography!! Ruby and I decided it would be fun to hang out with Sarah and her dog Eva and take a lot of photos. First we spent some time outside with Eva and Ruby, and I did a ‘mini’ photo shoot with Eva. We had lots of fun running and playing and Eva is an excellent model!!

Then we went to Sarah’s studio where Ruby and Sarah did a photo session. At first Ruby was a bit unimpressed and not too sure of the whole idea. But, she’s been a ‘studio’ model in the past and the lights and flashing don’t bother her. She really is plain sick of getting her picture taken so Sarah had her work cut out! At least for Sarah, Ruby decided to be on her Good Behavior. Not Best. But Good. She is a reluctant model. Check out Sarah’s blog post and AWESOME pics of my girl here.

After Sarah and Ruby had their fun, Sarah and I decided to take a lunch break. We left the girls at home to nap. When we got back, Sarah hooked her cool remote-thingy to my camera and suddenly I was the Studio Photographer! I got some super fun shots of Sarah, Eva and Teton. Below are some of my favorites.

Playing outside…

I love her ears!
her ears are awesome!

Happy Eva!

Look at this happy girl!

After all the running, Eva needed a DRINK!

Then we went back to the studio..

It was so SO great to hang with another pet photographer, whose work I enjoy and respect, to throw ideas around and get advice from each other! I see many more fun times like this in our future! Sarah thanks so much for spending the day with us! I’m REALLY looking forward to our next get together!

Stray Cat update!

So on Sunday Stray Cat decided she wanted to come in the house.  She was sick of being stuck out on the screened in porch!  So I opened the door and she darted in, only to stop in a panic because she had Rockford and Ruby rushing her!  She is slightly tolerant of Rockford, meaning she lets him get in her face and lick her for a few seconds before she growls at him.  Rockford has finally calmed down and knows to be more gentle with her.  She is less tolerant of Ruby, meaning she doesn’t want Ruby near her at all.  Boomer she has no patience for at all!  Boomer is so funny because he’ll start to walk quickly toward and she’ll fly into a panic and start hissing as she’s running away.  Boomer so far has no intention of hurting her, I think he just wants her to know that HE was here first!  He is like a pain in the behind brother, holding his finger an inch from your face and yelling ‘I’m not touching you! I’m not touching you!’.  He’ll stand a foot away from her like a statue, knowing she wants him to just go away.  She jumps on a chair in the dining room and Boomer sits under it, staring at her.  Boomer also likes to mark his territory in her litter box.  Cute little punk!!  He cracks me up!  When she’s had quite enough she either goes under my bed or back to the porch.  And Boomer and the dogs follow.  Here’s a few shots of her tolerating all of them. :)

An afternoon with Katie the Toy Poodle

This post is WAYYY over-due!  It was sitting in my Drafts folder for the past month ~ I thought I already published it! Better late than never!!

***

Last month I was lucky enough to do a shoot with Katie, a 2 year old toy poodle.  Katie is a super funny little girl ~ full of personality and spunk and TOTALLY stubborn!  Even funnier: I found out that Katie and I share a November 10 birthday!  That’s explains the great personality on this girl!! :)   We had a lot of fun running around in the yard and at the end of the shoot, we were both panting and collapsed on the grass together.  Whew!  Here are a few photos from the shoot.  Enjoy!

July 4, 2010

Last night we had a neighborhood party, out in the street, and Travis, Tim & Mike put on a really fun fireworks show for us!  The kids had sparklers & the adult boys had everything else!  I had fun playing with my camera trying to get shots of the fireworks as they went off.  I love the manual settings!  I kept the shutter open for 1.5 – 3 seconds (hence the ghosts you see walking around) :) and my ISO was HIGH ~ between 1600 & 3200!  We kept the dogs & cats safely in the house with TV on ~ I even brought Stray Cat in and put her in my bathroom with the fan on and she slept like a happy baby.  Hope you enjoy the pics. :)

Kitty Update

A quick note before I collapse into bed ~ I’m soo sleepy!!

I dropped her off at the Greensboro Spay & Neuter clinic today (which was perfect timing since I had stuff to do in Greensboro!) to get her spayed and get her shots up to date.
When I picked her up this afternoon, they told me that they sedated her, put her on the table, shaved her tummy, and said ‘Is that a spay scar?’ Soo apparently the vet here in Waxhaw that I took her to the other day shaved her tummy in the wrong spot, so they didn’t see the scar and told me she wasn’t spayed! (When I told Travis the first thing he said was ‘Don’t EVER take our animals there’. (right??) Anyway, it’s good news that she’s spayed. For one thing, I got a refund. :) It also means that at one time she was probably someone’s pet. I like to give that someone the benefit of the doubt and think that she was lost a long time ago, because of her condition with the worms and hunger. The other good thing is that in the 3 days she’s been with me she’s gained two pounds! Hopefully that means that those nasty worms aren’t stealing all her food! The bummer part was that she was unnecessarily sedated and is still woozy and wobbling. On the ride to Greensboro she was in my lap most of the time, then she moved to the passenger seat for the rest of the ride. On the ride FROM Greensboro I kept her in her carrier cos she was too drunk to navigate seat to seat. She did pee in the carrier (another good reason to have kept her in there!) but what choice did she have? When you gotta go, you gotta go!

Tomorrow I’ll talk to Carolina Paws, and I’ll foster her until they can get her adopted. The unfortunate part is that she’ll have to keep living on the screened in porch. She is back to growling and getting mad every time she spots one of my animals, plus she has her claws (Boomer doesn’t) so my animals aren’t used to the claws and I don’t want them getting their eyes scratched out! PLUS the vet told me to keep her away from my animals for at least a week.

It’s going to be a long week…I hate keeping her outside, and she wakes me up at 3am meowing. It’s so sad! Plus, I’m not getting my sleep, which is also sad.

Thanks for asking about her! Please keep your ears open for a good home! She is SUCH a sweet girl! Apparently not fond of other animals, but I get that, given that she’s apparently been living on her own for a while now.

‘night!

Found Black Cat ~ Please Forward!

**Update 6/30/10**

The kitty is resting comfortably on my screened in porch.  I made her a fort with an outdoor tablecloth and the chair with a cushion on it, so when it rains she has been going in there to stay dry!  Too cute.  I think she is feeling better…she’s been eating like crazy, which is understandable since I think she probably had to hunt for her food most of her life!  She is starting to use the litter box ~ she has peed in it a few times (and once OUT of it on the porch floor) and this morning she pooped on the floor.  I was happy about it cos it’s the first times she’s pooped since I brought her home.  So, I put her poo in the litter box and am hoping that will help her figure out what this crazy contraption is for!  She’s getting bold and looking thru the glass door at the dogs and not growling at them anymore.  Unless they are outside looking thru the actual screen, then she’s not so happy about it.  She loves people tho! Boomer woke me up at 3am meowing at her thru the door.  Dang glass door!!

So, the plan for now is to take her to Greensboro with me tomorrow and drop her off at the Humane Society Spay & Neuter Clinic (where I used to volunteer) and get her some shots and get her spayed, for a FRACTION of the cost the vet was going to charge me!  I’ll be in Greensboro to get my hair cut anyway so it’s perfect timing.  (Yes, I still drive 2 hours each way to get my hair done).  So I’ll drop her off before my appointment and then pick her up in the afternoon.  Then bring her back home to the back porch and decide what to do next.  I’m TRYING not to become attached because she has longer hair and is driving my allergies crazy crazy!  I brushed her this morning and holy cow ~ this little 6lb cat had as much hair come off her as Rockford has coming off him!!  But I suppose she’s never been brushed so it makes sense!

oh and a couple of folks have asked ~ I got her medicine yesterday for her tape worm.  I’m assuming it’s working cos she’s not as pale as she was yesterday and they don’t seem to be coming out of her right now.  All good things!

Here are a few pics I took this morning of her:  see Ruby looking thru the door? :)

**UPDATE**  I took the kitty to the vet and she has Tape Worm (the kind that look like sesame seeds).  They tested her for FIV&Leukemia and it’s negative, and she’s never been spayed.  Her teeth have a lot of build-up, and they estimate she’s between 5-7 years old, and is seemingly just a stray. :(   No micro chip.  So, I spent $100.00 and am now waiting HOPING Carolina PAWS will return my call and take her in.  She has NO interest in meeting the dogs!  It will cost me another $500.00 to get her spayed and up to date on her shots, and I just don’t have that kind of spare cash laying around.  This is awful, because she is seriously the sweetest cat!  I’m completely lost and don’t know what to do.  Normally I’d just keep her, and make all the animals adjust to each other.  But, I don’t have the funds to get her what she needs in order to integrate her into my family.  Oh and there’s Travis, who doesn’t know a thing about this yet and I can see his face now when he comes home to find a stray cat on the screened in porch. :)   Oy.

***

I was walking Rockford & Ruby this morning when I came across this kitty sitting in the tall grass.  I hooked the dogs leash around a tree and went over to the cat, and she (i think it’s a She, but not 100% sure) meowed and let me come right up and start scratching her ears and cheeks.  So I called my friend Amanda who lives a few doors down from me and she stopped what she was doing to run to my house and grab my cat carrier (THANKS Amanda!!).

So now this starving kitty (I gave her some healthy Blue Buffalo cat food & some water) is locked on my screened in porch with the dogs staring at her thru the glass door.  Sigh.  If only I hadn’t decided to do another mile with the dogs.  I can’t stand it when I come across an animal alone like this.  I don’t WANT the responsibility of making sure it’s ok, but I CAN’T just leave the adorable animals sitting there all alone.

Below are some photos of the beautiful black kitty.  Her tail is gone, looks like it was just hacked off!  She actually looks a lot like my Sheeba, who was with me for 17 years, with the same white spot oh her neck!  NO I am not looking for another cat.  My allergies are already going nuts and I can’t put my contacts in!  I’m going to take her to the vet later to check for a micro chip (cross your fingers!) and hopefully I’ll find her owner and if she’s lost, help them feel better.  If she’s not lost and they knew where she was all along, I may have to kick them for taking such horrible care of this sweet cat.

City Lickers Grand Opening Event

I attended the grand opening of City Lickers Pet Spa and Market (16640 Hawfield Way, Charlotte, NC ~ in the shopping center on the corner of 521/Johnston Road and Ardrey Kell Road).  It was a really fun event, with a face painter, farm animals ~ including goats, a white goose with blue eyes, a llama and a pony named Trigger! ~  vendors, (including Greater Charlotte SPCA and Haute Dogs ) and a giant blow up of Scooby Doo!  Lots of little kids running around and having a blast holding the piglets, bunnies and ducklings.  City Lickers has a grooming salon, AND you are able to bring your dog in to give them a bath yourself!  They also have tons of awesome toys, treats and healthy pet food.

Here’s a slide show of photos from the event!
